Một con Dơi: A Healthcode Violation is an exploration of the multifaceted affliction of the 2020s. Seeing the rampant rise of hate crimes toward Asian Americans during the pandemic, strategic pinholing of the community by governmental officials placed blame on the continent of Asia as the originators thereof. Subsequently, as mass hysteria against the diaspora reached ‘critical mass’, many communities took arms against the diaspora in direct physical and or overt means. The ‘restaurant’ acts as a stand-in for the American Dream in the community’s eyes as a whole, condensed to the perspective of Vietnamese American persons who like many other East Asian diaspora faced systematic closure of their businesses, validation, and proof of their achievement of their American Dream. Playing on the many stereotypes placed on the diaspora as well as the history thereof, the iconographies of many East Asian communities unfold, with the need to confuse and blur the lines as to what the Asian American story is; an amalgamation due to circumstance, and amalgamation stemming from necessity.

I strive to celebrate and call into question the many aspects of one’s walk to open the art canon to a ‘different’ look, where you can see a part of yourself, your interests, and something more.
